BIOHOME is effective as it is made from sintered glass. This material has hundreds of little tunnels that increases the surface area which provides beneficial bacteria room to grow. You want the beneficial bacteria to help stabilize the aquarium. The following diagram illustrates the beneficial bacteria growth in BIOHOME.
Note that this product is very porous, which is excellent for beneficial bacteria!
